Spring is here in full swing i have some pics of the place with trees in bloom and sprouting leaves.
The little bull calves are now about 500+ lbs. and since i used to pull them around by the horns into pens and such, they want to play with me . The one i call bully pushes me around . I often hide behind trees and dodge him. He is growing fast ... so the debate is either to let him get much bigger , or enjoy some nice fresh steaks real soon.
Just this morning he got his head stuck in a tool bench and was running around with it attached to his head for about 10 minutes . funny .

Hello, is posting on this site working? I tried three times and nothing happening .... feb 6 a few days of winter return ... 6 + inches of snow enjoy the pics of the snow i tried to post if they ever get here . I tried talking to the chickens but my chickenese is not working , or at least they couldnt tell the cows to stay off the front porch. The electric fence wire was under snow so irt shorted out and the cows just came across it. I guess they figured the barn was too messy and they wanted to camp out on my front porch. I told Mary that the next time we go to the auction I will have the auctioneer ask if there is anyone out there willing to train the cows to be housebroken or barnbroken so we do not have to keep cleaning the barn ....

FEB 2 2010 YEPPERS IM hERE, It is a beautiful day in Febuary , usally i have about 6 to 10 inches of icey snow on my driveway....this year i have just a trace. . its supposed to snow and sleet tonight. i was thinking about making the trip to Puxatawney, Pennsylvabnia last night to see Phil the groundhog this morning... but figured to keep my money in check so to speak. If the rest of winter is as nice as we have had then it will be a very nice winter.
It is the end of the month and i have just recieved a bunch of reminders that it is time to get to work filling out tax forms , new and old . sothat willl occuppy a big chunk of time and i need to get my unemployment stuff straightened out and find some work . so i am keeping busy. Since the weather is sooo sooo nice i think i will try to get my truck unstuck from the barn road and get some more firewood in the pile cuz winter aint over yet .

I have done some work in Utah and stopped at Zion national park... took a bunch of pictures there i will post some ...

Hi,
It's been a few days since I posted so.... Friday we were at the Amish auction and livestock sale . we managed to buy about 14 dozen eggs, very fresh large brown organic , some for as little as 50 cents a dozen. Locally at the stores they are about 4 times as much. I did buy a number of plants for th garden and i need to cut this short because i should collect some manure and do some planting.
I did a quick trip to Pittsburgh PA to drop off a few things Mary had made for her friends, and bday presents too. The kids liked the easy bake oven and candy and coloring books and hotwheels toys. Vicky our mutual girlfriend loved the rug Mary made for her. It was a latch hook rug with a Navaho pattern.
Vicky spent about 5 Hours setting up mary with an website on Tagged... I learned that her computer is now acting up with some kind of virus... I will stay out of there.
We stopped and paid Mary's bill for 10 cents at the Pharmacy there . They have been sending her a bill for 10Cents for three months... It costs 41 cents for postage each time.

We did get home Sunday around noon.
In the morning we had a Badger in the trap we set out for the local predators around here to keep our chickens alive. It appears rather young so i figure mom and dad are nearby too.. reset the trap.
Monday we went into town to get more calf formula as the charlotte is not eating enough yet. She seems to like the duck food.. better then the calf pellets. When we stopped for groceries we picked up a lot of markdowns to avoid last date of sale losses . We also picked a pool for the ducks at Mary's demand, A small wadeing pool. While checking out Mary discovered that they had ducks at the othe farm supply place still. Guess where we went!!!!
We managed to escape the tractor supply place with 3 ducks and 4 little chicks. A few were the Rhode Island Reds that seem to be very good from our first batch very friendly and large. We needed a minimum of 6, so we picked up a pair of small white chinese chickens too... I love chinese food....Do chinese eggs taste different? We did fill the pool when we got home and let the new ducks swim for a while ... the large ducks seemed to pick at the baby ducks , possibly a clumsy attempt to groom them. so i seperated them. the large ducks had to be thrown into the pool at first. then they loved it... after a while Charlotte the baby heifer claimed the pool and the ducks stayed away . It is now dumped due to the mess the critter made of it ... It will be interesting to see who claims the pool when i refill it.
This Tues morning I captured a mommy Oppsum in my trap. She had a group of about 4 tails sticking out of her pouch. This means there has to be a daddy around too. the trap is now reset.
So now you are caught up a bit.. i need to plant my Tomatoes. See you later... Dianne

Yesterday morning i checked on my chicks in the coop/ it was their first night there. I found 5 dead. Most with head trauma or without a head. I was rather upset 5 others were missing. I went to town a purchased a cage trap for the culprit. I had already lost a duck to a beheading. This morning i had a racoon in the trap that was baited with a dead chick. The racoon was disposed of, and the trap is now reset.

The insurance co needed some pics for underwriting... a little bit small for asingle peron ehh. m porch facia needs replaced and gutter here. the original builder used wood which was not treated or kiln dried, was easily atarget for pests,

Calfs have been tough to raise from babies, I am very frustrated by them. They catch pneumonia very easily. and if it is bacterial or viral the wrong treatment can result in mortality, They often do not adjust to the milk replacer well and develop diarehea and dehydrate. They refuse to eat and have to be forced with a tube down their throats and be kept hydrated , but not too much as they get scours. I am learning to hate calfs. They are cute and playfull and expensive to feed and care for. I have just lost two to pnuemonia. I was at the point where several others were ready to be weaned from the bottle , but they refused to eat food .... i was hoping they would start eating soon. It appears that two starved themselves waiting for a bottle that never came. I started two others back on the bottle but it was too late for one of the others which seems to have also had a flu like symptoms. It is tough to bury a group of baby calfs. the holes are pretty big. I thought the vet was expensive , losing all that invested in the calfs is worse.

It is a custom around here to get chickens and ducks and rabbits for the kids around Easter, So we got the works for Mary. makes her feel like the little girl she never had a chance to enjoy. it seems that we are running a petting zoo at times.

Back again.... need to get used to this... ihave tried to get on a few times but i lose the blogger site or the pass word or the timeto do anything significant.

Well let's catch up on a few things this week. April 2nd was my son Charlie's Birthday. I did not hear from him and I still don't know where he is at. So happy birthday Charlie.
On Saturday past I sent three baby bullys to the auction... I purchased them in December and they were the three out of eleven that survived the winter and thrived. They were holstein andhappy corn fed babies . I kind of figured they were getting a little too big for me to handle. the largest was about 350 lbs the other two were about 335 and 340. they looked good on the block with clean shiny coats . and the sold well for the type of animal they were , bringing about 80 cents a lb. After the auction fees and the cost of the ride to the auction they brought in 550. so i paid for their original cost and feed and most of theit partners losses . I know a lot more now about what ails them...
I was happy for them. two seem to have gone to a nice couple..
I picked up a little girl holstein at the auction too. had the vet shoot it full of vacines . a service they do cheaply.
Earlier I had lost several very small jersey calves . and a holstein baby bull. . could not figure why they were dying. whe rehydrated them and the still went kept them warmer shot them with pennicillan and tetramycin... it seems now that the antibiotics were not as effective because it may have been a viral Pneumonia, i called a vet as two of my other calves were sterting to show the same signs of going downhill. i had asked how much it would cost in advance. and felt quite reassured when they told me the trip charge was 30.
I waited cleaned up the inside pen, which is an attached garage , and moved the animals in from the outside pens. It was starting to rain lightly and getting colder. Well, the young lady veterinarian finally arrived. e talked a bit and she demonstrated how to use a tube to rehydrate the babies and she shot them up pretty well. noticed a calf that i thought didn't need help and straightend her out. I did have one that had gotten his eye int something. She actually gat him a shot of antibiotics in the eye. Nice work... but i would rather stick my fingers in a live electrical panel then in a bulls eye. well after all that we did get some advice not to have anymore babies until these are all better.... hmmmm . she finally got around to working up a bill and it came out to over 200 bucks... I might have been cheaper to dig a hole for all the babies and buy some fresh ones... but now i know not to call a vet.... and a few more things i can do to fix up the cows...
now, after my recent losses and sales plus a few additions i am at 9 head.
Mary wanted something else so she bought a few ducks. we now have three ducklings on the washing machine... which incidently stopped working last week.
